There are many types of autoimmune disorders, some of which can affect and damage a patient’s nerves. One such rare autoimmune disorder is Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), where the immune system attacks the patient’s body itself, often resulting in damage to the nerves, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and possibly eventual death in the most severe of cases. Anybody can develop GBS, although it is often more common in adults above 50 years old.

In Latin America, the highest incidence of GBS is located in Chile, where it is estimated an average of 2.12 cases per 100,000 population were reported. It was also found that between 2001 and 2012, 59% of patients were males and the highest rate of incidents took place during spring. The triggers of GBS can vary greatly and there are multiple causes that can lead to it.

An astonishing two-thirds of patients reported that they suffered from either a respiratory illness or diarrhea weeks before symptoms of GBS are seen. One of the most common triggers being illnesses that are the result of Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterium that causes diarrhea, with approximately 1 in 1000 incidents leading to GBS. GBS can also result from many other types of infections which include the Zika virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, and even just the flu.

Treatment for GBS can commonly include an exchange of plasma, high-dose immunoglobulin therapy, and treating symptoms while observing changes in health. Digital health solutions can help in observation as sometimes GBS can last days, weeks, or even months. And, although GBS is not contagious, germ associated outbreaks can still happen, making the exchange of information beneficial for healthcare should be able to be shared swiftly.
